As a lifelong athlete, I discovered Ultrarunning after running marathons all the United States. Living in Mill Valley (home of the DIPSEA), I accidentally ran the Quad DIPSEA in 1992 with no training & hobbled around for a week. Catching the ultra bug, I qualified for Western States 100 in running my first American River 50 miler. I was hooked by the challenging races & camaraderie of the community. This was a time when the running community looked down on ultrarunners. My ultrarunning years provided travel, fun, and stretching limits. Running races from Vermont to California, I was lucky enough to accomplish & finish the following highlights:

1993 – 3rd Open Pacific Region Ultra Grand Prix Series

Speaker @ Western States Training Camp 1994/1995

Vermont 100 – 10th Woman 1992

American River 50 – ran 5 times, fastest: 8:27

Quicksilver 50K – 1993 1st woman, 1994 – 4th woman

Washington Park 50 (Oregon) – 1st open woman, 2nd overall woman

Golden Gate Headlines Marathon – 1st woman

Man vs. Horse Marathon, Wales – Made headline article: Joan Travels 3,000 miles for Pain Gain

Western States 100- first bad snow year

Kettle Moraine 100 – rained first 11 hours

Action Asia 3 day stage races – ran 5 years

Paced 6 Individuals @ 100 Mile Races - all finished

In addition, I participated in Ride & Tie and long-distance cycling. Triple Crown (200 milers).
